We’re inspired by the recent growth of interest in Poetry Slams in our beautiful city of Perth.
We’ve been coordinating the WA Heats of the Australian Poetry Slam since its inception in 2007.
Actually, our crew have been organising poetry events since way back in the ancient times of 1995.
We cut our teeth on the crazy popular Openmouth sessions at PICA/FUEL Bar in 1996. Followed by myriad derivative hybrid spoken word/music/arts events ever since. We also instigated the Perth Poetry Summer Slams at the Blue Room and countless other showcase slams and spoken word festival events around the joint ever since.
WHEN IS PERTH SLAM?
We hold Perth Slam on the last Saturday each month at the Rosemount Hotel in North Perth.
CAN ALL AGES ENTER?
YES!!! All people of all diversities, ages, gender and non-gender, queer and cis – whoever etc etc etc are ALL ARE VERY WELCOME to enter.
Note that under-18s need to be accompanied by a “responsible adult” – we’re in a licensed bar, dude!
And we ALWAYS ENCOURAGE NEW POETS! And welcome old ones back. We love our Slamily 🙂
HOW CAN I COMPETE?
To compete in the Perth Slam just rock up to the venue on the last Saturday of each month. Signups are from 430pm at the venue (459 Bar at the Rosemount Hotel in North Perth). Entry is $10 or $5 concession. Please be early to ensure a spot. We have 14 spots available each month.
WHAT HAPPENS?
Doors open at 4.30pm. The official slam show starts at 4.45pm. We welcome the audience and explain how the whole thing works. Then we randomly draw our five judges (maybe YOUR friends/family) from a funny hat. We then introduce our featured SACRIFICIAL POET (previous month’s slam winner) to give our judges a quick chance to whet their whistles on a slam poem. Judges are asked to score out of 10 and hold up their scoreboard for the host to read out to the scorekeeper. Then the randomly drawn poets begin to strut their two minute stuff and are individually scored by the 5 judges. We keep it flowing until we exhaust the list. We may have a short interval dependent on the amount of poets. The event finishes at 6pm.
