What is a slam?

Basically a poetry slam is the competitive art of Performance Poetry!

It’s a poetry event in which poets perform spoken word poetry before a live audience and a panel of judges.

At Perth Slam we base our rules on the Australian Poetry Slam.

SLAMMERS: Slam contestants (the poets) sign up at the venue on the night. We have 14 spots available each month. We give you a stage, a microphone, a live audience and just two minutes to impress the judges with your original spoken word, poetry, hip hop, monologues and stories etc.

JUDGES: Five judges are picked randomly by the MC. We give out tickets at the door and draw from a hat. After each performance, judges hold up score cards using a 1- 10 scale, with 10 being the highest. Of the five scores for each poet, only the middle three scores are counted. The judges’ decisions are final!

PRIZE? At the Perth Slam the winner takes the door! We do take a little out for venue and admin costs but we’ll often give the Slam winner over $300! It depends on how many punters we get through the door. We also invite the Winner to be out Sacrificial Poet at the following month’s slam…
